TDM - Somewhere, beyond the sea~

THE UNKNOWN SEAS TDM

Hello and welcome to the Test Drive Meme for Unknown Seas! Welcome to the bottom of the whole ocean, kids. Use this as a space to freely test characters or character options in something close to the setting! Standard format applies, drop your character name and canon in the subject line

The facility is pretty simple, even if there isn't an exact map yet. There are a number of various windowless rooms and common areas in clusters connected by long glass corridors built in the bottom of the sea. If you look up you can see more tunnels above, but they're darkened completely. Here's some prompts! The kids love prompts, right?

1. Arise from the depths (of sleep)

You wake up in a very functional and simple bed in a very functional and simple room. It's definitely not, however, where you went to sleep. Did you even go to sleep? That's pretty alarming. Also potentially alarming is the window in the wall above the writing desk you've been given - that's uh. That's water out there, buddy. You're underwater. Well-lit underwater, but underwater. You should probably look around or maybe outside - who knows, maybe other people are around here? Or maybe you want to try to demand to speak to a manager.

2. Killing time

Between bursts of violent murder, there aren't exactly a bunch of scheduled activities in this place. So there's a need to fill the time somehow... what are you doing to kill time? I know most everyone interested is a murdergame vet of some kind, so feel free to add in whatever standard murdergame rooms you like to fill the space! There's all kinds of things here. Maybe there's a theater, or an art room, or... an aquarium, for ultimate levels of nonsense?

3. Motive time!

The Professor has announced a new motive for murder! Maybe you've been given an envelope with your deepest darkest secret, maybe you're being offered a great deal of money... maybe he's giving the kitchen staff a week off! There's all kinds of things he could do.

4. Material goods???

There's a vending machine in the hallway, with no... buttons for selection or anything, which is weird. All you can do is drop the coins you sometimes get into the coin slot and hope! It might drop all kinds of things - it's regains, you know the drill.

5. Down where it's wetter, down where someone's deader...

There's been a murder! Get out there and investigate, or like... don't. I'm not your dad. Maybe you want to shield some poor teenager from a grisly murder? Or maybe the investigation is over and you want to chat about the grisly murder over some relaxing tea from the kitchen. You do you!

6. Other

Or maybe there's something not on here that you want to do! This TDM is for you, live your dreams!

[ After the inevitable meeting where the cast is debriefed on their situation, Rin lingers. She lingers so long that everyone else has cleared out of the room, and then she wanders toward one of the water-facing panels, silent but for the click of her heels against the floor. Reaching out for the glass, she splays her palm against it, dragging her fingers along the surface and pushing at it as if to test its sturdiness.

And then she half-shouts, half-snarls in frustration as she kicks the glass as hard as she can. ]

I was so close!!

[ Congratulations! You've hit the jackpot! Or, at least, that would be the case if this were a regular slot machine, because what's just dropped into your hand is an impressively-sized ruby. Rin's eyes fly wide at the sight of it, which might be a reasonable reaction — except that she follows this up by lunging forward, very clearly making to snatch it right out your hands. ]

Hey, that's mine! Hand it over!

[ It is absolutely, 100% worthless in this situation, and yet. ]

[Maybe not everyone had quite cleared out. Having been lingering in the shadows, a not-quite-familiar priest watched Rin's outburst in something resembling amusement.]

Close to what, Rin? A startling change in appearance?

[ The noise that escapes Rin is very definitely a squeal. She jumps and whirls to face the voice, and for a second, Kirei might see her face cycle through several reactions, one after another: surprise, embarrassment at having been so careless, the fight or flight response of someone who has grown accustomed to living like there's a knife at her back...

Until, in the end, her expression lands on a grimace. Oh, it's just the Overseer. Frankly, Rin doesn't know what to make of his presence here, and she straightens up as much as she can, hands setting on her hips. ]

You should know as well as anyone that our real bodies don't necessarily match our avatars. How are you even here?

[ Listen, she isn't thinking a lot about his lack of disco ball shirt right now, cut her some slack. ]

[...who the what and where now? The startled reaction was perhaps a bit unexpected, amusing as it was. The hair color? Thoroughly confusing. But what she said panned out to complete nonsense to Kirei, leaving him a bit at a loss for once.]

The same way that you arrived here, I presume. Is that so shocking?

I'm pretty sure anyone would be surprised to have a bunch of data standing in front of their flesh and blood body. Unless you're about to tell me this is a digital space, too, and the Moon Cell just decided I needed a dye job?

[ she just keeps going ]

I have no idea in heaven or on earth what you just said.

[ In irritation, she stomps her foot. ]

What do you mean, you don't know? That's your entire job! It's what you were programmed to—

[ . . . processing . . . ]

[With the smooth grace of someone who's definitely had people lunging to get something out of his hands before, this raccoon guy here skillfully holds the ruby just out of Rin's grasp.]

Hey now, I don't see a name on this thing.

[mouflon]

[ This is not her finest hour. She grasps again, but this time she goes for his wrist. ]

I bartered for it fair and square! [ The fact that she does not say "bought" probably says something about how honestly she came by it, but details. ] You can't just keep it, that's robbing me!

[Casually tosses the gem into his other hand to hold behind his back.]

Yup, that's kind of my job.

[Not that he really looks it right now, but details.]

A big gem like this? Must have been some serious bartering skills.

[mouflon]

[ aaaaaa ]

Are you... Are you trying to flatter me with that? Because it's not going to work!

All I'm trying to do is figure out how a person like yourself really ended up with a ruby like this?

[ And yet snatching it could cause it to easily fall out of his hands and break on the floor, so he'll draw his hand back when she made her first attempt. ]

[ He'll hold it out to her right after. Though she's forgiven if she might've misunderstood given his aciton before. ]

[ She puffs up, ready to make another demand—but before she can do so, he offers it to her instead. It knocks the wind out of her sails in a way that leaves her floundering, Rin sputtering as she freezes up.

She looks up at his face, and then back to the gem in his hand. And then, very carefully, she reaches for it, like she's expecting him to jerk his hand back at the last second. ]

[ He doesn't, so she'll be able to take it easily. Though he's liable to be occasionally sarcastic, it's lucky he isn't too much of a prankster. ]

I assume it's an important, personal item.

[mouflon]

Th... Thanks.

[ The lack of trickery feels almost too good to be true, and once the ruby is in her grasp, she closes her fist tight around and it and tucks her hand behind her back. Just in case. ]

It's... I mean, I worked hard to get it, that's all. You wouldn't want someone to just come along and steal your paycheck, right?

It's been a long time since I've earned a "paycheck"...

[ Unless killing monsters while adventuring counts as earning one. ]

But, I understand. Even if I doubt the Professor would hardly care.

[ In fact, he idly wondered if the set up was entirely on purpose. Maybe to help in creating more animosity between them and all that. ]

4, FUSION IS A CHEAP TACTIC

[hardnosed]

[ Speaking of impressively sized gems, one of them is currently closing her big orange fist on the other! ]

Says who?

[ On the bright side, it's probably not the same cut a Ruby ruby would have, so there's no truly whacky sitcom style misunderstanding impending. On the dark side, there's still all of Jasper's personality to deal with. She looks down at Rin, evidently unimpressed. ]

I don't see your name on it.

[mouflon]

[ As much as Rin wishes otherwise, she's obviously physically outmatched by Jasper. Trying to take it by force will just end with her not having a ruby and also probably some broken ribs. She goes still, meeting Jasper's words with a scowl. ]

What does someone like you even want with it? It's not like a regular gemstone has any value to you people, right? That'd be like if... If humans went around using bones for money, or something.

[hardnosed]

[ Rin's behavior, which she would probably choose to read as acquiescence to her obvious physical superiority even if it weren't, keeps Jasper's own bearing solidly in casually condescending territory rather than menacing. That doesn't mean she lets her guard down. She never does. ]

I don't know what you humans use, [ she scoffs, and raises the gem to face level to take a closer look. ] It doesn't matter down here anyway. Currency is worthless in this dump.

[ The only pronouncement she makes is a nearly inaudible hn, because Jesus Christ of course it is. The ruby doesn't seem particularly impressive from where she's standing, but, trinket or money or whatever the stone was originally, it clearly means something to her. ]

You can't possibly believe you could barter your way to the surface with the likes of this. He put it here in the first place.

[ she's not calling him professor!! fuck off!!! ]

[mouflon]

[ She knows it doesn't have any immediate value, but it still grates to hear Jasper say the words currency is worthless. There's something with value, always, whether it comes in the form of tokens or favors or resources she can barter.

However, all of that is besides the point, because— ]

I'm not talking about bartering or bribing anyone here! But you don't intend to stay here forever either, right? And when I get out of here, I don't want to be destitute because someone who doesn't even understand how much precious stones are worth stole my savings.

[hardnosed]

[ She snorts. ]

How valuable can it be if [ waving the ruby On High ] this is all it takes to bankrupt you? You earthlings make no sense.

[ Zelos just so happens to side step away just as Rin made a beeline for the gem that popped out of the dispenser... thing. ]

Not so fast, sweetheart. I think this might be mine, actually.

[ He holds it up to the nearest light source, giving it several good looks over. ]

Okay, first of all? Don't call me sweetheart. And I'd recognize something like that anywhere, so hand it over.
